Journey to the Far Side of CGI

Been stargazing lately? Intrigued by Java's involvement in the recent Pathfinder Mars mission ? If so, you may not have noticed that Java has also landed-on the other side of CGI. In early June, JavaSoft announced the release of a new 100% pure Java Web server. During its landing, O'Reilly and Associates quietly announced the Perl Resource Kit Unix Addition, thus marking the beginning of their voyage to the other side of free Perl.

One Small Step for Sun

Leveraging against the shipment of Java WebServer 1.0 and the Java Server Toolkit, Sun Microsystems is expanding Java to the server side of the enterprise.

Says Roseanna K. Marchetti, product manager for Java Web Server at Sun,

We at Sun believe we are moving into a new era, and this era is called "generation servlets." This new generation of technology is allowing the enterprise to expand using easy to develop and easy-to-maintain Java servlets.

These servlets, which can be dynamically configured into a running Java WebServer, are Sun's 100% pure Java way of easily extending the capabilites of servers across multiple platforms. "Servlets are to servers as applets are to browsers," say the folks at Sun. They combine the strength of the encryption and authentication found in SSL technology with the benefits of the Java security model.
