Building Object-Oriented Web Pages With SilverStream
By Mark Pfeifer
Most companies are realizing that current development tools and techniques will not suffice to create true enterprise solutions. Even companies like Microsoft and Sybase realize this fact and are quickly bringing new tools like transaction, page, and component servers to market as well as enhancing their Java development tools to better communicate with these new products. However, because of the need to support disparate technologies, some companies are still struggling to fully integrate them into the enterprise. SilverStream, on the other hand, has been busy creating a single product architecture using a Java framework to bring the enterprise together. SilverStream is an application server that supports HTTP/IIOP for communication, SMTP/POP3 for mail processing, CORBA/RMI/COM for remote objects, JNDI/LDAP/Windows NT for user authentication, and Java for the development environment. In my opinion, SilverStream is a leading application server with a robust development environment fit for use by 4GL developers.
Enterprise Solutions
During the past few years, we have seen Java go from being just another language to being a viable solution for creating enterprise applications. Because Java is small, simple, full-featured, and portable, you can use it to create standard client/server applications or applets that run inside a Web browser.
Although Java will eventually be the language of choice, this won't happen until everyone has a high-speed connection to his or her server.
