Lab Note
Web Publishing with LivePage Enterprise
By Michael Floyd
When the folks at LivePage approached me with a new XML-enabled tool for
Web-site developers, I was intrigued. You see, the core group of employees
from LivePage came from Watcom/Powerbuilder. Some have been involved with
the development and marketing of Watcom C/C++, others have expertise in database
and SQL development. And they definitely have experience developing visual
database tools. After all, it was Powerbuilder that set the standard for drag-and-drop
GUI tools in the earlier part of this decade.
Now, LivePage is combining that expertise with XML to create a very powerful
suite of tools called LivePage Enterprise (see "
Product Information"). The product is a complete
content-management system that allows Web sites to publish live from a SQL
database. As the "Enterprise" part of the name indicates, this tool is particularly
useful within corporate intranet sites. That is, LivePage is designed for
organizations that have large volumes of text and data that they wish to publish,
and it scales quite well to both large problems and large numbers of users.
Of course, smaller sites, or smaller teams (even the one-person Web shop)
can also benefit from the tool suite.
