OO Fanatics

Hi Lincoln,

I smiled when I read a paragraph in your column in the June 1999 issue of Web Techniques. You point out that it's generally not possible to use a single Java class without loading a whole library along with it because of class interdependencies. I've been arguing with object-oriented fanatics for years that the dependencies between classes negate most of the benefit of OO and that shell scripting, with its simple standard in and standard out, is a better example of good OO principles than Java, C++, or Smalltalk. Anyhow, at least I'm not the spitting into the wind by myself.

Hi Patrick,

I was quite an OO fanatic myself for many years, and I still believe that it's possible to write a class hierarchy that minimizes dependencies between classes.
