Red Hat Linux Adds Commercial Appeal

Red Hat is answering the business community's demand for Linux by shipping a bundle designed for commercial use.

Linux E-Commerce Server includes Linux 6.0 and a version of the Apache Web server that integrates RSA Data Security's 128-bit encryption engine. It also includes shopping-cart software and demonstration versions of commercial applications.

The free MiniVend shopping-cart software is redistributable under the GNU license. MiniVend supports many of the features found in commercial shopping cart software, including online credit processing with CyberCash, Authorize.Net, and PaymentNet; security with SSL and PGP; and database connectivity with SQL and DBI/DBD. MiniVend is a Perl application, so it can be customized.

The $149.99 Linux E-Commerce Server also includes demonstration versions of Hell's Kitchen Systems' Credit Card Verification System (CCVS) and HP's WebQoS Peak. CCVS simulates a credit-card point-of-sale terminal on the computer, enabling merchants to directly approve payments from their Web pages without going through a service such as CyberCash. It can be used in a single Web store or as a gateway for processing payments from many Web servers. Several APIs make it possible to customize CCVS and integrate it with third-party applications, such as shopping cart software and database products. CCVS ships with sample code.
