Tic Tac What?

Al,

Your July 99 Java@Work column "Building a Server Switchboard" was awesome. Our development team really learned a lot from it. I followed the instructions to build both the tic-tac-toe server and client. Everything worked fine in my VJ++ environment. However, when I tried to run the applet outside the J++, I got an error that said:

"Applet TicTacToe security. Couldn't connect to '172. xxx.xxx.xxx ' with origin from..."

Am I missing something there? Thanks in advance,

Man Lee

Man,

My guess is that you're trying to connect to your server at 172.xxx.xxx.xxx but you're viewing the Web page as a local file or via the localhost alias. So, say the TicTac server is running on host darkstar. Then you must load the Web page as: http://darkstar/tictac.htm.

Why? Because browsers don't let you connect to a host unless it is your host. Otherwise, a malicious applet could connect to, say, a mail server and send threatening email, and thereŭd be no way to trace where it came from.<>
