Email The Common Denominator

Rather build your own email-based customer support system than outsource? Then you might want to pick up Programming Internet Email (O'Reilly). By bringing email standards together in one place, author David Wood, technical director of Brisbane, CA-based Plugged In Software, eliminates the need for programmers to go searching through disparate RFCs for technical specifications. Written as both a guide and a reference, the book is handy for beginning and experienced Internet programmers alike. Web developers, especially, will be grateful for the numerous ready-to-use examples in Java and Perl.

The book's 19 chapters are organized in five parts, the first of which covers Internet email formats such as basic text, MIME, and OpenPGP. Part II describes the POP, SMTP, and IMAP email protocols. Once readers have a good understanding of the basics, they can use the APIs in Part III and examples in Part IV to build the Internet's next wonder-app. Finally, Part V provides even the casual programmer with methods for controlling spam, and covers a number of newly proposed email protocols.

Programming Internet Email is available for $34.95 from O'Reilly's online catalog
