Turning the Tables

Molly,

Once again, you tackle another one of the long-standing designer debates with common sense and a few hard facts [see "Integrated Design" October, 1999]. The dynamic vs. fixed argument has been a hot topic in my company ever since we wrote our first table tag. The first approach I ever knew was designing for an 800x600 screen. Visitors using 1024x768, or anything in between, viewed the page without a problem. After much debate, we settled on using a fixed table size of 590, which works out except with 640x480 users who don't maximize their windows. Every time I think I have all the resolution bases covered, I go to a friend's house and he tells me he can't read the page, which I find is because he has it set at 640x480. The JavaScript also works, but it's a little impractical to make three copies of a 160-page site just to accommodate the 640x480 people, who will end up getting burned any way you write it.

Quick Tips, Please?

I want to congratulate you on a wonderful job. I've been reading your magazine for a year now and look forward to each issue. One thing I'd like to see is a "quick tip" section, where user questions are compiled and answered in a short column.

My question is in regard to IE5.0
