Doing a Little Tango

Austin-based Pervasive Software recently announced the updates of its Tango development studio and the Pervasive.SQL database family. Together, the products reduce development time for Web-based applications by balancing the virtues of recycling and portability.

Tango 2000 lets developers drag and drop common objects into projects without having to know the underlying code. Programmers can choose from COM objects, JavaBeans, or new Tango Class Files, which can be reused in applications. Tango 2000 also features a full XML implementation. Tango Application Files are saved in XML format, which means developers can edit or create the files outside of the Tango environment.

Pervasive.SQL 2000 is a cross-platform database that combines the Btrieve and SQL access methods in one small-footprint package. Tiny-footprint might be a more appropriate term, though--Pervasive.SQL 2000 for Mobile Devices barely has a 350KB impression, while the Embedded Systems version requires 100KB, and the Smart Cards version less than 8KB. While the database is available for several high-end platforms such as Windows NT, Solaris, and Linux, its small size makes it a perfect fit for the limited IT market.
