Environmentally Conscious
By Kurt Cagle
Most developers view ASP as the predominant (albeit far from exclusive) means for scripting server-side applications. ASP's primary limitation is that it works with only Windows Internet Information Server (IIS). However, a number of vendors are porting ASP to different platforms and Web servers.
HalcyonSoft, a recent entrant in this field, has introduced Instant ASP (iASP), which lets you use ASP in any of a variety of Web environments. These environments range from Apache to Zeus, with stops for Sun's Web server, Netscape's/iPlanet's Fast Track, JRun, and the Xitami server, among several others.
Installing iASP is straightforward. You must have at least Java 1.1.3 JDK installed on your system. Use the simple, iASP Remote Console applet to configure your use of ADO and Servlets. iASP works on many platforms because it is written in Java. This makes it easier to work with Java components, although the overhead required for JDK may deter some potential users. My only complaint with the setup program is that I'd like to set up default virtual directory information right there rather than through consoles after completing the setup.
