Content Management for Small Companies

By Eddie Appell

Although most companies strive to have Web developers, graphic designers, networking gurus, and content creators come together in one department, few have enough resources to employ according to this model. Small to mid-sized companies must often employ small Web teams. If you belong to one of these companies, and your Web requests are pouring in but you don't have the resources to see above the day-to-day requirements of maintaining your existing HTML pages, a content management solution like NCompass Labs' Resolution 3.0 might be the answer.

Resolution is a Windows-based solution that incorporates templates, content, graphics and media resources, and user management in one interface. Resolution provides API hooks that you can use to extend the workflow or integrate a third-party tool to enhance Resolution's functionality.

Resolution uses the Windows NT security system for access. This makes it very easy for experienced NT Webmasters to administer users and their permissions because they don't have to learn a new security model. Anonymous users on the site are granted "Guest Subscriber" access and can browse all public pages. To grant access to a specific area of the site, a customer extranet for example, you just create the Subscriber group, add the NT group as a member, and add that area to the permissions, as in Figure 1. Using this model you can also set up rights for Authors, Editors, Moderators, Template Designers, and Resource Managers, with an infinite number of people in each role.
