AbriaSoft Eases MySQL Installation
By Brian Wilson
Open-source software is a slice of life at
Internet speed. Late in June, MySQL AB
(formerly TcX AB) announced that it was switching to GPL-style open-source licensing with MySQL. Almost immediately, two companies, AbriaSoft and Nusphere (Nusphere.com) were formed to act as MySQL distributors and service organizations. Both companies have announced the availability of downloadable MySQL distributions. Last September, MySQL AB announced that MySQL would be part of the standard Red Hat 7.0 distribution. Now that MySQL comes with Red Hat 7.0, who would want a separate distribution? To answer this, I got an early release CD-ROM of the AbriaSoft SQL Standard distribution.
I started my installation with a clean copy of Red Hat 6.2 on a bare hard drive, then loaded the AbriaSoft disk.
AbriaSoft claims that the installation takes five minutes. Indeed, if you do it right the first time (see my tips in "
AbriaSoft in a Jiffy"), the claim is true.
I ran the installer.sh script and chose the Express option as suggested. It zoomed along. The installer did not ask me to reboot, not even once. In the script's final step, it starts a browser with notes on what's been done. Be sure to follow instructions on creating a password on the MySQL root account. The installer started up both MySQL and Apache, and it set them to restart after a reboot, too. The X-based installer will launch Netscape with more documentation.<>
