A Web Development Studio in One Package

By Ken Cox

The designers of Macromedia's UltraDev 4 Fireworks 4 Studio have listened to their customers and put the right features into their product. When you upgrade from UltraDev 1 to the Studio version, you're buying a feature-rich Web-page designer (Dreamweaver 4), an excellent tool for creating database-driven sites with an improved source-code editor (UltraDev 4), and a sparkling graphics program (Fireworks 4).

Dreamweaver

The core Web-design tool in this package fulfills its reputation as one of the best WYSIWYG HTML environments on the market. When you create Web pages in Dreamweaver, you get a high level of browser compatibility. Although no product can cope with the idiosyncrasies of all browser versions on all platforms, Macromedia provides the richest support available. The program avoids browser-specific syntax and attributes, and therefore generates HTML code that almost all browsers can understand. By pressing F12 or Ctrl-F12, you can preview the current page in your target browser.

The new Layout View feature makes page design and object positioning even easier than in previous versions. However, getting into Layout View isn't intuitive. Layout View is a submenu of Table View because Layout View isn't so much a way of seeing your workspace as it is the function of designing a table the size of your entire page.
