Director Goes 3D

By Clayton Crooks

Long before the Internet became such an important medium, designers used Macromedia Director to create cross-platform multimedia applications for Windows and Mac operating systems. Director has long been the crown jewel in Macromedia's extensive software offerings. While you can still use it to create content for CD-ROMs or any similar media type, recent releases have focused on making Director the tool of choice for Web-oriented multimedia development.

Macromedia's transformation to a Web powerhouse continues in this new release. Already a powerful application, Macromedia has added an impressive array of features to its flagship product. One of the most interesting additions is the ability to stream RealAudio and RealVideo and to include Flash 5 assets and movies in Director content. Other features have been added, such as the ability to create dynamic Web pages with XML, but the addition that's sure to attract the most attention is the new 3D support.
