Did I Mention It's Fast?

By Brian Wilson

Zeus is an enterprise-ready Web server software package that runs on a wide variety of Unix platforms. Zeus recently released version 4.0, and I tested the Linux version. Check Zeus' Web site to see if Zeus supports your flavor of Unix. It probably does, because it has a fairly comprehensive ports list.

Let me get this out right up front: Zeus is fast. I'm a confirmed Apache user, so I did a quick check using the ApacheBench benchmarking tool. All of the tests I ran revealed Zeus to be easily two to five times faster than Apache at serving both static and dynamic content. Replacing Apache with Zeus is like upgrading to faster hardware.

Zeus Web Server 4.0
Zeus Technology
$1700 for two CPUs; $850 for additional CPUs.
Pros: Excellent performance; comprehensive feature set. Cons: CGI scripts may require slight modifications; PHP configuration is convoluted.

Startup

Zeus was easy to install. I downloaded the appropriate tar archive for Linux from the Zeus Web site and then saved my key in a file, uncompressed the tar archive, and ran the zinstall script.
